Child Watchdog - Parental Control Software for Windows
Frequently Asked Questions...
How long will Child Watchdog take to download / install ?

The download time will vary depending on the speed of your connection,  but if you take as an example a typical system with a standard modem,  then using the active download link shown above in red should have the Watchdog installed and ready to go on your system in under 5 minutes.

Will Child Watchdog work on my PC ?

Child Watchdog works on all current 32 bit Windows platforms.  This includes Windows 95,  98 and ME,   Windows NT and 2000,  and the latest edition,  Windows XP.

The Watchdog will not work on the Apple Macintosh platform.

Starting Child Watchdog automatically when the PC restarts.

In the registered version of the software,  if the PC is shut down while the Watchdog is monitoring your system in hidden mode,  Watchdog will automatically re-start when the computer is restarted to continue monitoring.

This restart is hidden from user view so they are not aware of Watchdog's presence.

This feature is not enabled in the trial mode,  and Watchdog will not start if it was not hidden when the PC is shut down.  You do not need to do anything to enable this feature,  it is automatic.

My Child Watchdog is not restarting - why?

In order to restart on reboot,  Watchdog needs to put a string into the system registry.  On some systems this is not permitted,  often by a firewall or virus prevention program.

If this is the case,  then fortunately there is an alternative on your system - you can still enable automatic restart by hand.

To manually add restart to your system you need to do the following:

  1. Open a file browser and locate your copy of cwinst.exe (this is usually located in c:\program files\exploit\
  2. Open a second file browser and locate the directory c:\windows\Start Menu\Programs\StartUp\
  3. Now,  create a shortcut to the file cwinst.exe in the second directory (you can do this by dragging the file from the first window to the second with your mouse while holding down the shift and control keys on the keyboard).
  4. Finally,  right click on the new entry you have created and click properties.  In the screen edit the 'Target' adding /hdn to the end of the line (after the ",  with a space between the " and /hdn)

This will force the system to load Watchdog on startup,  and tell Watchdog to load in hidden mode.  Watchdog will then check to see if it was hidden on shutdown,  if it was it will start to monitor the system,  if not it will exit.

You do not need to do this every time,  once it is enabled you can forget about it.

What about desktop icons?

As standard,  the installation will create icons in your windows menus for Child Watchdog and its un-install program in your start menu.

If you have a very bright child,  and wish to maximize security then delete these icons/links.  Don't worry if your child has seen these icons,  as they will not be able to start the software if its already running,  or access it without entering the password you set.  They will however know its installed,  so if this is an issue remove the icons !

How do I remove the Child Watchdog icons ?

If you do not want the icons for the Child Watchdog on your system following installation,  right click on the 'Start' button and select 'Explore'.  Now select the sub folder 'Programs',  then locate the folder called 'Exploit' and simply remove the links to the software in this folder.

You can still launch the software manually,  without these links,  by locating the exe file called 'eitcwd.exe' using your file manager.  The file is usually located in 'c:\program files\eitcwd\',   double click it to launch the software.

How do I un-install Child Watchdog if I have removed the icons ?

Locate the folder containing the Child Watchdog,  this is usually 'c:\program files\eitcwd\' and double click on the file 'unwise.exe'.  This will start the un-install software and remove the Watchdog from your PC.
